6. The image shows that of a prostate gland, explain ultrasound imaging of the prostate gland to a patient who is over 40 years old.
(See attachment) Answer Ultrasound imaging, also called ultrasound scanning or sonography is the first line means of imaging the prostate gland. It is a minimally invasive procedure in that there is no major surgical intervention; a prostate ultrasound is done by use of a transrectal ultrasound which provides images of a man’s prostate gland and surrounding tissue. An ultrasound probe is inserted into the rectum and sound waves are sent into the prostate gland and reflections are processed to image the gland. There is no ionizing radiation. The prostate ultrasound is done to: 1. Detect disorders within the prostate. 2. Determine whether the prostate is enlarged with measurements acquired for treatment planning. 3. Detect an abnormal growth within the gland. 4. Help diagnose the cause of a man’s infertility. A transrectal ultrasound of the prostate is used to help diagnose symptoms such as: 1. A nodule felt by a physician on digital rectal examination (DRE) of a man’s prostate on routine physical examination for cancer screening. 2. An elevated prostate specific antigen (PSA) on blood test. 3. Difficulty urinating Ultrasound guided biopsy of the prostate gland is sometimes required in order to make a diagnosis of prostate pathology. It is a real time imaging which makes it useful for guiding these minimally invasive procedures such as needle biopsies and needle aspirations. Reference: Radiologyinfo.org – Prostate ultrasound
